The crucial ingredients for making the most profound single malts include locally grown barley farmed in near perfect growing conditions including a mild climate and long hours of Summer sunshine. Water is supplied from springs and burns within the area, generally rich in minerals adding flavour to the whisky.
There are a number of distillery tours which we would be happy to book for you. These include; The Aberlour which offers a good two hour tour at £7.50. This is excellent value and has been well recommended by a number of guests that have stayed with us. The Macallan has a ‘precious tour’ and the Glenfiddich offers a ‘connesiours tour,’ and a ‘Balvenie tour’. One of the biggest events on the Speyside calendar is the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival, hosted in Dufftown, which will take place again this year between the 28th of September and the 1st of October. The festival is special as it allows visitors a unique chance to visit distilleries not usually open to the public. There is also the chance to meet experts who create nuances of the Speyside malts, take part in many master-classes, tours, and unique tastings, and attend world class contemporary concerts. You may also taste wonderful food at whisky dinners, lunches, fairs and exhibitions. There are approximately half of Scotlands distilleries within a 30 mile radius of Craigellachie many of which offer tours at no cost or for minimal expenditure.
